Boston, MA--- Representative John W. Scibak (D- South Hadley) has been named to join the Conference Committee on An Act Relative to Bullying in Schools. The Committee will convene to reconcile the differences between the Senate and House of Representatives versions of the legislation. “I am honored to serve on the conference committee for this legislation,” said Representative Scibak. “This legislation will play a significant role in the state’s efforts to stopping bullying and making schools safer for our children. I am committed to ensuring that schools are equipped to address this problem and that the staff are trained to effectively identify and eliminate it.” Scibak will join Representative Martha Walz (D- Cambridge) and Representative Elizabeth Poirier (R-North Attleboro) as the House members of the Committee. The Senate members are Senator Robert O’Leary (D- Barnstable), Michael Knapik (R-Westfield), and James Eldridge (D-Acton). “Both branches unanimously passed sound anti-bullying measures, so I am confident an effective piece of legislation will reach the governor’s desk,” said Knapik. “My focus during conference committee discussions will be maintaining the strongest possible reporting requirements to ensure all bullying incidents are given serious consideration and brought to the attention of law enforcement when appropriate.” The committee expects to meet next week. The members hope to quickly resolve the two versions’ differences and get the final bill to the Governor to sign.
