October 20, 2011 - The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women (MCSW) and the Springfield Commission for Women (SCW) will co-host a public hearing on November 9, 2011, from 4 pm to 6 pm. The hearing will be held at the YWCA of Western Massachusetts, located atOne Clough Street inSpringfield.   The purpose of the hearing is to give all stakeholders inSpringfieldthe opportunity to discuss issues and concerns important to women, and the gaps or barriers they have experienced in the provision of services. Citizens, government officials and organizations that advocate for women and families in the region are invited to attend and encouraged to participate in the open public hearing by providing testimony/recommendations. The Springfield Commission for Women is one of 13 municipal and regional commissions appointed to advance women toward full equality in all areas of life and to provide a permanent, effective voice for women in communities across the Commonwealth. The November 9th public hearing is one way the commissions fulfill their mandate of surveying, reviewing and reporting on the status of women inMassachusetts.   The testimonies provided will be recorded and discussed by the commissioners to consider impact of policy on women and families inSpringfield. The findings will be cited in the MCSW Annual Report to the commissions’ appointing authorities and to state and local officials. In following up on the recommendations, the commissions will proactively collaborate with regional organizations and elected officials to assess and impact legislation. The commissions will accept both written and oral testimony at the November 9th hearing. Those interested in testifying should sign in upon arriving at the event and will be called upon in order of entry. Oral statements should be limited to three (3) minutes per speaker and should include recommendations to the Commissions.
