"Michael E. Smith Middle School turned 50 this year, and on Jan. 18, local celebrities joined students and staff in the school’s gymnasium to celebrate the golden anniversary with music, honors and reminiscences. “What has happened in this school will help shape who you are,” State Rep. John Scibak told about 600 children who sat cross-legged on the gym floor and lined the bleachers. Smith Middle School serves grades five through eight. Scibak told the children he knew their principal, Erica Faginski-Stark, when she was only 8 years old. She was on a softball team with his daughter. “I was one of the coaches,” Scibak revealed. A chorus called the Opus Singers performed, and the middle school band, some of whom were hardly bigger than their instruments, played “Puff, the Magic Dragon” and other tunes..."
